A Collaborative Approach to Complex Systems Engineering using a Web-based Visual Analytics Framework

Despite recent advancements in computing power, cost and development times of highly engineered systems — especially in the aerospace and defense industry — have historically scaled at alarming rates as their complexities increase. These trends cast a non-economically viable landscape for future systems. In addition to the challenges of increasing complexity, engineers are facing new challenges of geographically dispersed teams; lack of integrated IT frameworks to share data, share models, and collaborate; and the need to make decisions on increasing amounts of data. In order to address these challenges, a Web-based systems engineering framework that leverages visual analytics and modern Web technologies is presented to aid designers in product's lifecycles. An overview of the framework is provided, followed by case studies of its application to DARPA's Adaptive Vehicle Make program and the design of gas turbine components, along with future research areas.
