The Atlas is a maritime helicopter designedrnfor medium-range, rapid insertion of anrnArmy Future Combat System light-armoredvehicle.rnThe Atlas was the winner of thern2005 AHS/NASA Student DesignrnCompetition. Its primary mission was tornsupport the logistics of a 20 ton vehicle overrna 125 mile radius of action, from an existingrnNavy vessel. The Atlas helicopter designrnhas a fully folding 7-bladed, 116 ft diameter,rnsingle main rotor and a 6-bladedrnconventional tail rotor. The compactrnelastomeric hub and fully-composite mainrnrotor blades, with elastic bending-torsionrncouplings and active trim, reduce vibrationsrnand increase performance. The advancedrn3-engine powerplant and compact, lightweightrnface-gear transmission produce andrntransmit 23,487 hp, with continuous OEIrncapability. These advanced features allowrnfor a high turn rate in cruise at 145 kt withrnfull payload, and hover up to 23,000 ft. Thernadvanced components also provide thernAtlas a low empty weight fraction. Thernmission equipment provides full situationalrnawareness and minimal workload, in allrnweather and night operations, and RF/IRrncountermeasures. Overall, the designrnfocused on low acquisition and operatingrncosts by minimizing empty weight andrnmaintenance with high-value components.rnThe innovative and economical Atlasrnhelicopter is the ideal platform for presentrnand future heavy lift operations.
