Metal mold casting technologies have been the dominant methods for production of structural aluminum casting for the 30 years. The permanent mold process, also called gravity die casting in Europe, and its variations (semi permanent mold, low pressure, VRC/PRC, PCPC TM etc.) are a family of metal mold processes that have been used in a wide variety of commercial, defense and automotive applications. Examples of the types of demanding components that have been produced with these processes include: automotive wheels, steering knuckles and control arms, brake components, automotive cross members and engine cradles, cylinder heads and engine blocks, and structural housings on aircraft and helicopters. The generic process and technology descriptions, along with typical product applications of each of these processes will be presented. The use of CAE activities to insure predictable and repetitive processes will also be reviewed along with the applications of post inspection operations.
