The TELIS (TErahertz and submillimeter LImb Sounder)rninstrument is a new stratospheric balloon-borne cryogenicrnheterodyne spectrometer developed by the GermanrnAerospace Center (DLR) in cooperation with thernNetherlands Institute for Space Research (SRON), andrnthe Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in the UnitedrnKingdom. It allows limb sounding of the Earth’s stratospherernwithin the far infrared (FIR) and microwave spectralrnrange. The ambitious spectral coverage of the TELISrninstrument is accomplished by use of three frequencyrnchannels: 500 GHz, 480–650 GHz, 1.8 THz developedrnby RAL, SRON and DLR, respectively. The instrumentrnwas mounted on a stratospheric balloon gondola and hasrnparticipated in three scientific campaigns in Esrange nearrnKiruna, Sweden from 2009 to 2011.rnThe development of FIR/microwave limb sounding techniquesrncontributes to an increased demand in high resolutionrnradiative transfer modelling and reliable inversionrnstrategy. A retrieval code PILS (Profile Inversion forrnLimb Sounding) has been developed at DLR’s RemoternSensing Technology Institute. In this paper we presentrnthe results of various trace gas retrievals from the TELISrnsynthetic and real measurements by employing PILS.
