The spectrometer includes several mirrors (12,13), and a diode laser with a lens. A detector arrangement and cooling arrangement are mounted on a part (11) which can be deployed transversely wrt. the flight direction from the fuselage (1) of an aircraft. The air flows transversely wrt the optical axis through the deployed part with the mirrors. The part can be deployed so that the mirror nearest the laser is at a minimum distance greater than the boundary layer thickness from the surface of the aircraft fuselage. USE/ADVANTAGE - For absorption and stray light spectrometer using infrared diode lasers for measuring atmospheres trace gases and aerosols, pref. in the stratosphere. Low weight, fast and accurate, operable at very high altitude.
