PERFORMANCE OF AN IMAGING MIPAS INSTRUMENT THROUGH THE INFORMATION LOAD ANALYSIS

A novel generation of satellite instruments that soundrnthe atmosphere with advanced techniques is being devel-rnoped. In this context, an hypothetical instrument operat-rning in the infrared spectral region as MIPAS/ENVISATrnbut having different spectral resolution and observationrngeometry has been investigated. This instrument wouldrnbe an imaging spectrometer (IMIPAS) able to sound thernatmosphere with a very fine scan-pattern. All these char-rnacteristics would allow to perform innovative studies (e.g.rnthe structure of the UTLS with high level of detail) thatrnnowadays are prevented mainly due to spatial resolu-rntion limitations. The analysis shows clearly that IMI-rnPAS would have the capability to extract information inrnthe UTLS region with unprecedent horizontal and verti-rncal resolution. Furthermore, the very fine measurementrngrid determines also a horizontal and vertical uniformityrnof the sensitivity. This characteristic is highly desirable asrnit makes easier the geo-location of the retrieved profiles.
