Abstract: This paper describes the design, analysis and simulation studies of the pointing control system of a gimballed large diameter (3.5 M) ground-based telescope, to meet stringent requirements. The gimbal forms, Alt-Alt, Alt-Alt- Azimuth and Alt-Azimuth are compared in the concept selection. Structural mode shapes, derived from the Nastran models are included in the structural analysis and performance predictions. Pointing jitter prediction models include seismic and coolant flow power spectra. Worst case tracking scenarios are discussed, with suitable feed forward arrangements. Active secondary mirror mount options, as well as beam alignment options, are considered.!0
