Antifungal and Herbicidal Activities of Cinnamic Acid Derivatives

Cinnamic, p-Coumaric and ferulic acids were isolated from pineapple stems. Cinnamic acid showed strong antifungal activity against Pythium sp. To find a new lead compound, 121 kinds of cinnamates, cinnamamides and cinnamoylamino acid esters were prepared to test for antifungal and herbicidal activities. Among the prepared compounds, N,N'-ethyl phenyl cinnamamide (A-27) showed 46percent antifungal activity at 10 ppm against both Pythium sp. and Corticium rolfsii.
