Medical Robotics - a New Field of Medical Engineering and Robotics

In this paper, medical robotics is considered as the common field of medical engineering and robotics. A general scheme of a robot assisted medical procedure is analyzed from a systemic point of view. The basic tasks of the physician - perception, execution, planning and control - as well as those of the medical robot and its corresponding subsystems are described. Robot assisted medical diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation procedures are discussed as special cases of the general scheme.
