This paper presents the IEEE 802.15.4 Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Network (LR-WPAN) standard as a vehicle for ranging applications. It depicts the technical considerations and system requirements of the standard to enable applications that require low power low-data rate, and short-range wireless communications. In particular, this paper will examine the pitfalls and implementation issues involved in making a location application operational within the confines of an ad-hoc self-organizing wireless environment that is built atop IEEE 802.15.4 medium access control (MAC) and physical (PHY) layers.
