A NEW MEDICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR MEDICAL PROCESS MANAGEMENT

A today's hospital is required to provide better medical service within limited medical resources. To achieve it, an efficient system which collects and stores necessary information for medical act process evaluation is indispensable. We have clarified it about the data items which should be acquired from HIS, the file configuration which data base should have for effective and wide range analyses, the function which the new system should be equipped with in order to realize a useful new medical information system for medical process evaluation. A new medical information system that has started operating in Kochi University Hospital since 2002 includes "Medical Process Management System" based on this idea. This system acquires "medical act process identifier" data having simple 6WlH("by Whom", "to Whom", "Where", "When", "Why", "What", "How") information structure at the time of medical act order events and accumulates every medical process identifier on a single table as a record. Analyses aimed for the evaluations of outpatient clinic processes and hospitalization processes have started recently. So far, we have found this system is easily applicable to various evaluations such as the discovery of rate-determining step in an outpatient clinic and support for a critical path making.
