The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago [MWRDGC or District]rnoperates one of the largest wastewater treatment agencies in the world. In 2006, MWRDGCrnbegan a comprehensive upgrade program of its existing instrumentation and process controlrnsystems at both the Stickney plant and at various remote locations. The new system would bernrequired to not only replace aging instrumentation and controls at the Stickney plant, but alsornallow the District’s other plants, remote pumping facilities, and storm water retention reservoirsrnto become an integral part of unified system architecture. The vast scope of the necessaryrnupgrades required the District to divide the effort into a phased approach spread over a numberrnof years. The phased approach for installation of a multiple network backbone, consequences tornthe approach, benefits, and impacts to Plant Operations are reviewed.
