Wet Weather Management and Sustainability in 21st Century American Cities

In the United States, wet weather water resources management in older cities has often beenrndriven by regulatory pressure favoring traditional infrastructure such as deep tunnel storagernsystems. A more sustainable approach is suggested, aimed at altering the hydrologic responsernof urban areas to more closely mimic watersheds with less development. This approach canrnmanage urban water resources effectively while complementing programs on neighborhoodrngreening, sustainability, open space, waterfronts, outdoor recreation, and quality of life. Thisrnpaper discusses trends in wet weather management and suggests an approach for long-termrnretrofitting of highly urbanized areas.
