Using Cell Topography in Predicting Intra-Cell Mobility in Wireless Internet Networks

Wireless networks are becoming increasingly prevalent since they provide user with flexible and convenient access to network resources. Recently, there has been a rapid growth of efforts in research and development to provide mobile users the means of "seamless" communications through wireless media. In wireless networks, mobility management is a costly task that requires additional resource utilization. Location update messages need to be sent whenever the mobile user moves into a new location area. The overhead of such location update is huge for networks with small location areas and large number of mobile users. In this paper, we present the design of a predictive scheme for handoff management and connection rerouting for wireless Internet hosts so that disruption to data traffic is minimized in order to maintain a certain level of QoS. The proposed scheme uses wireless cell topography to predict mobile users intra-cell as well as inter-cell mobility. Also, the performance of the proposed predictive reservation scheme is compared to other predictive schemes.
