Queuing Strategy for Improving Voice Quality of IP Telephony in Local Area Network

In real-time interactive applications such as IP telephony, audio packet end-to-end delay, jitter and loss are important parameters because they affect the quality of service. Many studies of improving real-time application's quality focus on reducing packet delay, jitter and loss. In this paper, a priority queuing strategy using port number is proposed to reduce packet delay, jitter and loss in local area network. We compare this strategy with various existing queuing strategies in the background traffic based on our measurements of Internet backbone traffic. Our simulation results show that the proposed strategy is better than other queuing strategies in terms of packet loss and jitter.
