This paper reports on the design, simulation, and preliminaryrntesting of a three phase variable reluctance stepping motor.rnThis motor is pancake-shaped with an overall outside diameterrnof 8 mm and a height of 3 mm. The outside diameter of thernrotor is 4.7 mm. The rotor and stators occupy 2 mm of thernheight with the remaining 1 mm reserved for a 6:1 planetaryrngear reductor. The rotor and stators were constructed ofrnHyperco 50 using conventional miniature machining. Thernreductor was assembled using copper and PMMArn(polymethylmethacrylate) components that were constructedrnusing the LIGA (Lithographic Galvanoformung Abformung)rnmicrofabrication process. The maximum measured stall torquernof the motor without the reductor is 0.47mNm at 4W and thernmaximum speed is 2400 rpm.
