The performance of a new type of horizontal gas-solid separator has been studied with a view to use it for a circulating fluidized bed boiler. Overall characteristics and detailed performance of this novel separator are studied for a number of important design and operating parameters. Operating parameters include particle-sizes of solids and gas velocities at the inlet of the cyclone; while design parameters include the size of the separator inlet, exit diameter and the offset of exit pipe inside the separator. Performance parameters studied include overall collection efficiency, grade efficiency of particle collection and pressure drop across the separator. The effect of the velocity of the gas at the inlet of the separator on the performance parameters is presented and discussed. The present work reports and discusses the effect of particle size distribution on the grade efficiency.
