Experimental investigations are reported, which are intended to carry out a scalar nonlinear time delay dynamical system exhibiting a sub-critical Hopf bifurcation. These investigations are guided by analytical results from a perturbative approach near the Hopf point, in the limit of a large delay. An experimental bifurcation diagram is reported, which exhibits a characteristic hysteresis with bistability between a cycle and a fixed point.
