Recent developments in the field of size and shape determination of anisometric particles are reviewed. A principle is described how shape information for oblate particles can be extracted from a comparison of particle size distributions measured by two standard methods, using sedimentation and light scattering data. New concepts introduced in this connection (median shape factor, LS shape factor and shape-size-dependence curves) are discussed. Experimental results are shown and discussed for tabular alumina and several types of floated kaolins. The relation of the results to specific surface determinations and suspension rheology is briefly indicated.
