Blind Trial on Coals for Rapid Handling Assessment

The assessment of the handling characteristics of a coal before it enters the materials handling system is important to the industries where coals are handled in large quantities. The assessment method must be effective, and it must also be quick, reliable and cheap for it to be useful for the industry. This paper describes a new rapid tester which has been designed and constructed with these criteria in mind. It measures directly the cohesion which develops in a coal subjected to a known consolidating pressure. The results of a blind trial on three different coals are presented. The results were compared with the Durham Cone test and the mining operators' perceived handleabilities of these coals. The results clearly demonstrate the versatility of the new tester.
