Integrated Friction Winder and Shaft Hoisting System for the Olympic Dam Expansion Project

This paper provides an overview of the 9 Mt/a bin to bin shaft hoisting system supplied by MAN GHH Australia to the Western Mining Corporation's Olympic Dam operations as part of the $1.5B expansion project which will almost treble production. The heart of the system is the 6.5 MW Integrated Friction Winder utilising a variable speed squirrel cage induction motor powered by a Cyclo-converter and incorporating a sophisticated speed distance protection system and four channel closed loop braking. This is the first integrated winder to be installed in Australia and the largest of its type in the world. The rope guided, two skip system has a payload of 36.5 tonnes and a cycle time of 1 1/2 minutes.
