Possibility of recycling of galvanised sheets scraps in iron foundries, in the induction furnace

Automobile manufacturer use more and more galvanized steel sheets for the production of car bodies. This tendency leads to large quantities of galvanized sheets on the srap market. The recycling of these sheets causes serious problems particularly when they are melted for the cast iron production. A team at Ecole Centrale in Lille has developed a process which enables these sheets to be melted in an induction furnace, eliminating problems of environmental pollution and metallurgical disadvantages. This patented process has been tested several times in the laboratory, in a 25 kg prototype furnace and in a pilot plant (750 kg). The industrial feasabili-ty has been proved. This process does not impair the normal performance of that furnace type. At present, Ecole Centrale in Lille, Electricite de France and Francaise de Mecanique de Douvrin are partners developping this new process at its industrial stage.
