STUDIES ON IDENTIFICATION OF SUITABLE SUGARCANE VARIETIES, MONTHS OF PLANTING AND AGES AT HARVEST FOR MAXIMISING CANE YIELD AND SUGAR RECOVERY IN LATE SEASON

A field trial was conducted in Sakthi Sugars, Sivagangai, Tamil Nadu to identify the best variety for late season planting, besides, the best month of planting and age at harvest. Of the six varieties, 88 A 189, CoC 671, Co 92012, Co 86032, Co 92022 and CoV 92102, studied, Co 86032 was found to perform outstandingly for cane yield, commercial cane sugar and sugar yield. There had been an increase in cane yield with increase in age at harvest beyond ten months and upto 12 months period, age upto which the study was conducted. Cane quality was found to depend on the month of harvest and the age at harvest. Harvesting during April, irrespective of the month of planting, namely May, June or July was found ideal to have the best commercial cane sugar. As age of cane increased, cane quality had decreased and yield of cane increased. This had helped to maintain the sugar yield with increasing age of cane. Besides Co 86032, 88A189 was also found to perform well. Though CoC 671 had higher Commercial Cane Sugar, the quality could not be maintained with the advance of summer and age. CoV 92102 which is preferred in Tamil Nadu had not matched the other varieties studied with respect to cane yield or quality in most of the combinations tested. Co 86032 had been found to out perform CoC 671 as it maintained cane quality with increasing age at harvest. For May and July planting, Co 86032 can be selected, whereas, 88 A 189 can be selected for May planting for better quality.
