SCHEDULING IRRIGATION IN SUGARCANE BASED INTERCROPPING SYSTEM

An investigation was carried out to study the irrigation requirement for sugarcane based intercropping system during 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 on vartisols at college farm, Parbhani. Twelve treatment combinations of three intercrops (Groundnut, Cowpea, Green gram) in sugarcane and four irrigation regimes (IW/CPE 1.2, 1.0, 0.8, CGS of intercrops) were replicated three times in factorial randomized block design. Irrigation was given as per cumulative pan evaporative at 60 mm depth. Sugarcane yield was increased by 24 ton ha~(-1) due to Groundnut intercropping and this system produced SEY of 144 ton ha~(-1). The highest net return of 78296 Rs.ha~(-1) was recorded in Sugarcane + Groundnut system and was found most remunerative, followed by Sugarcane + Green gram. The maximum CU (2797mm) and UWE (6.44 ton ha~(-1) cm) was observed in Sugarcane + Groundnut system and Sugarcane + Greengram respectively. The scheduling of irrigation at 1.2 IW/CPE ratio was the most remunerative to produce maximum net return (87460 Rs ha~(-1)) and higher CU (2877mm). However the maximum WUE (5.5 ton ha~(-1) mm) was observed with scheduling irrigation at critical growth stages of intercrops.
