This work deals with the design of a real-time tool that implements a set of PID-type controllers using different algorithms and different structures. The tool not only performs the real-time control of a process but also performs on-line monitoring. It also offers an auto-tuning option that includes the evaluation of the dynamic characteristics of the process (via step response or a frequency domain model) and the computation of controller parameters using different methods. Once the auto-tuner has computed the PID parameters and these settings have been tested on the system, the auto-tuner sends the settings to the commercial PID. Copyright direct C 1998 IFAC
