A methodology and its recent improvements for the determination of recombination coefficients of ceramic and metallic TPS materials in single species gases is presented. A new probe technique to determine Mach numbers and isentropic exponents in high enthalpy plasma flows is shown. Numerical improvements concern a correction function to account for the structural heat loss in inverse heat flux calculation from the pyrometric material probe tests. Additionally, a newly qualified method and facility for the determination of total and spectral emissivities is described. Values of measured total emissivities for five different materials in the temperature regime of 750 - 1750 K are given. Emphasis is on the characterization of candidate sample materials for the catalycity based reentry experiment PHLUX (Pyrometric Heat fLUx eXperiment) onboard the European experimental reentry capsule EXPERT.
