Local effective electrolyte conductivities were measured in a gas-evolving electrochemical reactor using a pair of platinised-Pt mini-electrodeson an alumina substrate,as a potential means of obtaining information about the spatial distribution of electrolyte voidge due to bubbles.Local conductivities decreased with increasing current density and with height up a hydrogen-evolving nickel cathode,the changes being smaller with increasing electrolyte flow rate and distance from the cathode surface.After normalisation of the data for temperature increases caused by ohmic heating,the changes in conductivity were transformed into local bubble fractions in the electrolyte using Bruggeman's equation.
