VIBRATION CASES BY CLASSIFICATIONS

This paper presents some Vibration Cases but in the form of Classifications, e.g., Alignment, Oil Whirl, Resonant Whip.etc. This format was chosen to belter "group" some Vibration Case Histories, selectively reduce the amount of data to reduce volume, and add some narration of the problem-indications-solutions. Several years back the author ranked his Field Problems, which is very difficult over the time span, into Categories- in descending order. There was a reason for this. It was felt that the "assumed" ranking of Vibrationdirectedcorrectionsoriginated from more mundane "Causes",i.e. Balance, Resonance, Instabilities, Rubs. From the perspective of the author and his 44 year background with machinery & vibration; the expected is not the norm. Not enough care, attention, and understanding has been applied to assembly, installation, and commissioning. It is almost ironic that the API introduced a NEW set (～7) of well prepared Recommended Practice (RP) Standards in Oct.,1994. These RP 686 documents, "Guidelines for the Pre-installation Design and Installation of Machinery" are trying to address my concerns. The Subcommittee is now telling the RP 686 Task Force to "soften" the pre-installation requirements...well now?
