Many Power Plants have sediment retention ponds which require control of pH for the effluent. Control of this outfall water's pH presents numerous challenges — especially when faced with tight budget requirements. This paper presents a methodology developed and utilized successfully in several power plants to control the pH of sediment retention pond effluent. Further, this was accomplished without great capital outlay. Each plant has unique characteristics, and the particulars should be reviewed to find and understand actual need. However, in many cases the particulars of the physical system, with control technology and hardware available will meet the requirement of keeping sediment pond effluent pH in compliance. Difficulties in controlling pH, due to the highly nonlinear titration curve and limitations of typical Proportional - Integral - Derivative (PID) controllers are discussed. Reagent delivery problems are also presented, including techniques utilized to meet the need.
