With complex and changing cybersecurity requirements, the temptation to merely disconnect control and SCADA systems from other computer systems may be great. But the loss of access to the data obtained from these systems can prove highly detrimental to the long term operation of a power plant. Without having ready access to data, routine monitoring and trending along with troubleshooting of system and plant problems become very difficult and cumbersome. Without having ready access to data, analyzing system and plant events can move from hours of effort to days of effort. Disconnecting a control or SCADA system from other computer systems does not have to occur. Installation of data diodes can provide needed levels of cyber asset protection while maintaining access to valuable data.
