SLOVENIAN SCIENTISTS AS POPULARIZATORS OF SPACE EXPLORATION AND RESEARCH

Even before the Republic of Slovenia became independent (1991), as republic of former Yugoslavia it was a home to scientists who were very much interested in space exploration and research. Even though the former Yugoslavia had never actively been involved in space research and exploration, it is the fact that writings of these popularizators have been of great value (especially as they were also involved in education and were scientists in their field at the same time). The main theme of this paper is presentation of these men, their work and also a tribute and remembrance of their respectable work. One of them was the physicst Dr.Lavo Cermelj, who, in the late fifties and in the early sixties published, two books reffering to space research and exploration. He also wrote numerous articles on space and science and was the editor of a publication on natural science called Proteus for a long time. The other was also a physicst, Dr.Vladimir Ribaric. In the sixties and up to the late eighties he published three books on space research and exploration and military space.He is also well known for his numerous space, technology and science related articles in a popular Slovenian monthly magazine called ZIT (Life and Technics). As a commentator of Apollo space missions to the Moon he become very popular and widely known to the general public.
