Recently the bismuth-based piezoelectric ceramic systems are intensely studied in order to find environmentally friendly piezoelectric ceramics and replace the widely used lead-based piezoelectric ceramics. In this paper, we concentrated on increasing the piezoelectric properties and controlling microstructure of Bi_(1/2)Na_(1/2)TiO_3-based ceramics using the two stages calcination method. Fine ceramic powder based on J;he composition of (Bi_(1/2)Na_(1/2))_(0.99)Ca_(0.01)TiO_3, among the bismuth-based piezoelectric ceramic system, was synthesized by this method. The experimental results suggest that compared with the conventional one stage solid-state calcination method, two stages calcinations method can decrease the particle size of ceramic powder, widen the sintering temperature range and improve the microstructure and piezoelectric properties of ceramics. This method also has influence on the phase transition of (Bi_(1/2)Na_(1/2))_(0.99)Ca_(0.01)TiO_3 ceramics.
