A Study on the Formation and the Transformation of British Colonial Cities in India Town Planning and its Transformation After Independence in New Delhi

New Delhi was constructed as the new capital of British India. Axes, symmetry, vista and monumentality were emphasized in its design. The essential principle of the plan was segregation. Hierarchy in the colonial society was projected to the layout pattern of New Delhi. Residential area was separated into quarters correspond to races and classes of residents and sizes of the plots and houses were different according to the race and class of the resident. After the independence, New Delhi confronted the rapid increase of population, serious lack of houses and sprawl of urban area. Delhi Development Authority made master plan to solve those problems in 1962. In 1990 the new master plan for Delhi which succeeded the basic concepts of 1962 master plan was published. In the process of reconstruction and redevelopment, land use has become more efficient and higher density. While modern principles and regulations were introduced in the town planning of New Delhi, original segregational pattern still remains in the location of squatter. Economical classes have succeeded this pattern in the replacement of status and position in the colonial society.
