Cockpit Display Research Testing using Pocket PC

New technology is a cost-effective in the research and testing of aviation cockpit display features. The FAA is studying a graphical pilot display capability - Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI). The display has the potential to provide increased situation awareness and new information capabilities. The CDTI possess various features, which includes the display of aircraft within a specified radius, the location of ground vehicles, and an airport surface map that depicts airport runways and taxiways. Pocket PC software is under development to support testing and evaluation of various display features and CDTI capabilities. The CDTI Pocket PC (CDTI PPC) software can accept and display live, recorded, and simulated data, on a Pocket PC. The CDTI PPC provides significantly more testing flexibility than operational CDTI units due to its portability and ease of software modifications. The CDTI PPC is a Windows CE application for real-time data and display features. The system has the capability to present aircraft position information on a moving map. CDTI PPC interfaces with Global Positioning System (GPS) and Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) receivers to present owncraft location. Simultaneous display of information about other Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) equipped aircraft is a pre-planned product improvement. Integrating ADS-B on a Pocket PC will provide an affordable way to conduct research and testing of a range of applications. This includes pilot assessment of displayed information for both air and ground targets during all phases of flight.
