The present studies consider the retention and deformation characteristics of austenite in low carbon multiphase steels and their impact on performance. The major findings of the work is summarised as follows: 1. The adoption of two stage heat treatment cycle i.e. intercritical annealing followed by isothermal holding leads to appreciable retention of austenite. 2. The size and sape of retained austenite plays a dominant role in influencing the TRIP phenomena. Film type morphology and tiny size of retained austenite as observed in V-chemistry are desirable in achieveing improved ductility. 3. It is not only the amount of retained austenite, but a combination of morphology, size, amount and stability that result in the attainment of useful mechanical properties.
