To investigate the coefficient of friction in the hot rolling of steel, medium carbon steel slabs are rolled on the Hille 100 Experimental Rolling Mill without lubrication at various reductions and roll speeds. Rolling force, rolling torque, forward slip and surface temperature are measured. A work roll with a set of embedded pins is used. The variation of the coefficient of friction in the roll bite was obtained directly based on the force equilibrium of the radial and oblique pins. The inverse methods are also adopted to evaluate average coefficient of friction. Average coefficients of friction calculated by direct method and inverse method are compared. The results show that the coefficient of friction varies in the roll bite and has the different trends in the forward slip area and backward slip area.
