For the structure of a neo-Hookean plate bonded to a neo-Hookean half-sapce which is subjected to a simple compression, we find through a linear analysis that there is an optimal value of mu / mu , approximately equal to 2.25, at which the structure is most stable where mu and mu are the shear moduli for the half-space and plate, respectively. Through the calculation of the coefficient of the cubic term in the evolution equation for near-neutral modes centred at the critical mode number, we find that such a structure is imperfection sensitive if 0.575 < mu / mu <1.
