THE PERILS OF INSTALLING VFD DRIVES ON VERTICAL PUMPS

In order to save energy and to have better flow control, variable frequency drives are often installed on equipment. For the above reasons, vertical pumps are having VFDs installed at an increasing rate. The application of VFDs on these vertical systems can result in motor insulation and bearing problems and high levels of structural vibration. This paper discusses issues to consider when installing a variable frequency drive with the main emphasis on structural vibration problems on vertical pump VFD applications.
