INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT OF MUNICIPAL WASTE IN EDMONTON, ALBERTA

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada has implemented an integrated solid waste management system which achieves a high level of urban sustainability. The system combines several approaches to waste management to best address the particular environmental, social, climatalogical and demographic factors of the area. A comprehensive public education / information system is integrated with community-level programs as well as with large scale material collection and processing systems. The system is user friendly and has achieved high levels of participation in voluntary waste reduction and recycling. Fully 70% of collected residential materials are now being diverted from landfill.
