Screening is a critical part of many mineral processing circuits and keeping the aperture of thernscreening media within specifi cation is vital to ensure effi cient performance of the processingrnplant. Typical ways of estimating and/or measuring the wear of the screening media vary from veryrnsubjective methods (for instance, using the human eye) to manually checking the width of a fewrnof the more severely worn gaps with a measurement device. Subjective methods can be fl awed byrnhuman error while manual checking can distort the polyurethane or rubber materials that are usedrnin several types of screening media. All of these errors can cause either premature replacement ofrnpanels or, even worse, poor screening of the material.rnMetso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) and Metso Screening Media Solutions (SMS) haverndeveloped an innovative method that measures screen aperture using advanced image processingrntechniques. Field trials of the device are presented in this paper, which shows the comparisonrnbetween the different methods of measuring apertures. Case studies demonstrate how the system,rnwhen combined with ScreenTrack, Metso’s industry leading maintenance system, and screeningrnmedia, is providing users with the best possible screening solutions.
