Decision making is a critical issue that may determine if a company flourishes or declines. Employee motivation is especially a major part that organizations should make right decisions about. Motivation is a factor that improves employee satisfaction, productivity, and the overall performance of organizations. Even though there have been many motivation theories in the context of leadership and management, most of the prior theories have not reflected the properties of current organizations in the 21st century.The objective of this study is to examine how leadership and management affect employee motivation within a boundary of existing motivation theories. The study is based on needs theories including Maslow's hierarchy of needs, McClelland's needs theory, and Herzberg's motivation theory and process theories including Victor Vroom's expectancy theory, Adam's equity theory, and Goal setting theory.This study shows the necessity of future research on employee motivation to help decision making in 21st century organizations.
