Most organic coatings are susceptible to damage when brought into contact with solid objects. In this presentation, three critical failure modes for this damage have been identified in powder coatings: plastic deformation, fracture and the mixed mode of plastic deformation and fracture. Understanding these failure modes aids the better understanding of the mechanisms of mar and scratch resistance and can lead to the long sought-after goal of rational improvement. In addition, the inclusion of inorganic additives can significantly impact or even alter the failure modes of polymeric coatings.
