摘要

The efficient management of information during the construction process has a major influence on project success. Many companies have different ways of dealing with this, from paper based documentation to customised digital systems. The previous use of electronic document management systems (EDMS) has represented a means of standardising on communication of documentation, and has, for some time, been embraced by large construction organisations. The use of such technology by small and medium enterprises, however, would tend to represent innovative change from previous modes of communication. And without the knowledge of appropriate implementation procedures, companies may be discouraged and resist utilisation of the technology which, may otherwise, contribute to project success. This paper covers the implementation of an EDMS system for a medium sized organisation by means of a project-based case study. Issues of strategy development for an EDMS are discussed, together with project characteristics. System design and document control on site are also considered in addition to implementation progression. Human aspects in connection with project personnel are addressed which covers staff attitudes and system usage. A post implementation review is also included which highlights the lessons learnt and promotes the development of a revised strategy for the future implementation of EDMS in construction.
