Diverse artificial ecosystems that are comprised of only useful plants can fulfill many practical functions both in space and on the ground for CELSS and advanced indoor greenery. A facility for experiments with artificial ecosystems was developed, where periodic complex activities of microorganisms in the soil and active motions of plants at night were observed. Realistic models for artificial ecosystems are indispensable for designing and maintaining desirable artificial ecosystems. A method for developing realistic models is proposed based on the experimental results and the self-organization of order in diverse complex systems.
