At many facilities the chiller plants are the largest user of energy while being critical to the daily operation of the facility. The chillers themselves are subject to a wide variety of operating conditions that can reduce the operating efficiencies of the chillers and result in increased energy consumption. A centrifugal water chiller can lose as much as 30% efficiency and still appear to be operating satisfactorily. Common problems such as tube fouling, refrigerant leaks, water flow problems, non-condensables, oil contaminated refrigerant, etc. are difficult to identify and therefore do not get corrected until the chiller is obviously not performing. This session will present a unique new web based tool for monitoring chiller performance such that efficiency problems are identified quickly and energy cost impact is quantified in dollars making repair cost/ benefit analysis possible for the most common chiller efficiency problems. Case studies will be presented by Medical College of Georgia and Emory University.
