Nowadays, the use of synthetic ropes in the anchorage of offshore platforms is becoming common. In spite of having a good knowledge of the mechanical behavior of this kind of rope, a study of abrasion wearing is presented here in this paper. Regarding the life of a synthetic rope during its use, in quantitative terms, little is known about wearing by abrasive contact with other materials and equipments.rnThe main objective of this work is to establish procedures and criteria in order to determine the abrasion wearing of the jackets. It is intended to analyze behavior using abrasion tests in jackets of scale ropes made of different synthetic materials and to verify which would provide the best conditions of use.rnIn order to do this, procedures were established for the preparation and testing of specimens as well as the criteria to analyze the results. The fundamental criterion adopted for determining abrasion wearing takes into consideration the mass loss of the specimen associated with the mechanical resistance loss of the yarns that constitute the jacket. Two materials were analyzed using these procedures thereby obtaining wearing curves according to time in different test conditions.
