BIOMASS SUPPLY MANAGEMENT AND LOGISTICS FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING

The present work aims to record and organise data on biomass availability in terms of biomass types,rnquantity, quality, and spatial distribution to match the needs of different users. A case-driven requirement analysisrnand design of integrated biomass supply management and logistics has been produced. The research area is located inrnThessaly/ Central Greece, with a biomass potential energy capacity of over 27.000.000 GJ (600.000 toe). The area isrnselected because of the comparative advantage of Thessaly in agricultural residues, which correspond to the 17% ofrnthe agricultural residues of the country. They mainly refer to forestry, cotton stalks, straw, tree pruning and olivernkernel processing. Thessaly hosts 5% of overall Greek biomass energy stations (2.2 MW). The theoretical as well asrnthe technically available biomass potential is estimated. For the latter, technical constraints for the supply chain arerntaken into account during the biomass supply chain (harvesting/collection, transportation, storage) and calculated asrnpercentage of losses on the expected biomass production. On site information on the residues from the agro-forestrnindustries are also collected in order to identify their availability potential and their logistics.
