From Waste to Wealth: The Journey in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant

Integrated steel plants are virtual giants devouring huge quantities of raw materials (16mt/yr in VSP) and generating large quantities of dust, sludge, slag, fly ash, hazardous wastes and toxic gases. Several clean technologies and a wide array (206 nos.) of pollution control equipment have been provided to maintain the pristine quality of the environment and to generate wealth to the tune of Rs 8,381.63 million (US $ 190.49 million) per year from the recycling and sale of wastes. Yet, about 36 % of the wastes, comprising mostly of fly-ash (13%), LD slag (7%) and BF slag (15%) remain unutilized. Several innovative strategies and modern technologies are now on the anvil which shall ensure 100% recycling / sale of all the so called 'wastes' and thereby enhance the total revenue generation by the next financial year to about Rs 8,642 million ( US $196.4million) per year!
