Two different grades of titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V were applied as appliques to semi-infinite 5083 aluminium targets. Two target thicknesses and a bi-layer laminate for each alloy type were impacted by tungsten alloy projectiles. Residual Depth of Penetration measurements and analysis with various ballistic merit ratings showed that Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V had a small ballistic performance advantage over Ti-6Al-4V This was expected, not only because of its better material properties, but also because it adopted a superior perforation mechanism. Comparisons were also made with alumina ceramics for performance baselines; and applique lamination showed a much stronger influence on ballistic performance than alloy type. The effectiveness of the titanium appliques was found to be strongly thickness dependent.
