Regenerative glass furnaces use extremely high air preheat temperatures, resulting in very high NO_x levelsrn(uncontrolled NO_x levels above 4 kg/tonne of glass are common). Consequently, these furnaces are beingrnplaced under stringent regulations in the U.S. and in Europe. For example, the Southern California arearnlimits NO_x from container glass tanks to 1.65 kg/tonne, with stricter regulations expected. To help the glassrnindustry meet these regulations, the Institute of Gas Technology, and its industrial partners, CombustionrnTec, Inc., Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., Anchor Glass Container Corp., and Owens-Brockway GlassrnContainers, have developed and demonstrated a low-cost retrofit NO_x control technology. This technology,rntermed oxygen-enriched air staging (OEAS), has been installed on five endport furnaces, including severalrncommercial sales. NO_x has been reduced 50 to 70% to 0.85 kg/tonne. An ongoing sideport demonstrationrnhas lowered NO_x more than 30% to 0.75 kg/tonne. Funding has been provided by the Gas ResearchrnInstitute, the Southern California Gas Co., the U.S. Department of Energy, the IGT Sustaining MembershiprnProgram, and the industrial partners.
